Currently a huqin player of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Wu Yi-fang was born in New Taipei City, Taiwan, and graduated from the Tainan National University of the Arts. She completed the seven-year programme of Chinese music majoring in erhu under the tutelage of Chen Ting-Wei, Wu Jung-Tsan, Chen Ju-Chi, Ku Feng-Yu, Tsai Chen-Yu, Xiao Baiyong and Sun Huang, among others, and minoring in piano, percussion, composition and sanxian. She was the concertmaster and lead string of the Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra, Erhu Principal of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Gaohu Principal of the Tainan National University of the Arts Chinese Orchestra (Undergraduate Section), and a member of the Qiao Yue Chamber Orchestra. Wu won the first prize in erhu consecutively at the Cheer Taiwan International Music Competition in 2010 and 2011, and was selected as ‘Rising Star of the Year – Music 2017’ by the Cultural Affairs Department, New Taipei City Government.
Wu’s recent performances include the erhu and pipa double concerto, Fire: Lady Caiyi, in the concert, ‘Gada Meiren – Hu Bingxu and Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra’, at the Hsinchu Performing Arts Center in February 2014; Lingnan on String with the Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra at the Xinzhuang Cultural Arts Center in October, 2014, which was part of the group’s concert tour in Taiwan; a huqin recital at the National Concert Hall in Taipei in May 2015; Hebei Hua-Bang-Zi and Birds Returning to the Woods at the 2nd Zhongshan City Youth Chinese Music Concert in Guangzhou in May 2017; and a huqin recital at the New Taipei City Arts Center Performance Hall in December, 2017.
