Lam Chun-hei, Matthew, is a music undergraduate at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, specializing in composition. He studied with Prof Chan Kai-young, Dr Lo Hau-man, and Dr Phoebus Lee Kar-tai before studying composition currently with Prof Wendy Lee. He is an active composer and an enthusiast of contemporary music styles. His goal is to explore and experiment with a wide array of sounds and timbres, especially with contemporary instrumental techniques. Recently, Lam won an honourable mention in the 2020 Hong Kong New Music Ensemble’s ‘Call for Scores’, was a finalist of the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild’s ‘New Generation 2020’, came top in the ‘Toolbox Percussion International Composition Competition 2019’, and won an honourable mention in the University of Miami's ‘2019 Ensemble Ibis Composition Competition’. He received a full scholarship to participate in the second edition of Toolbox International Creative Academy (TICA) to take lessons with USA-based composer Charles Boone. An active composer, Lam has had many works featured in various events and concerts, including ‘Music from the Heart’ (2020 and 2019); ‘Musical Convergence’, a concert held by the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild; ‘Music x Hon Chi Fun Showcase’ presented by the Composers and Authors Society Hong Kong (CASH); and TICA’s 2020 opening concert. His works have been broadcast by RTHK Radio 4 and played by various groups, such as the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Mivos Quartet (USA), Cong Quartet (Hong Kong [HK]), Music-Joint Association (HK), Stellar Trio (Beijing), and Toolbox Percussion (HK).
