Chang Chia-hsiang

Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra yangqin performer Chang Chia-Hsiang graduated from Tainan University of the Arts with a double major in yangqin and conducting. Chang began his studies under Lin Meng-Hui and later studied with Hsieh Tsung-Hsin; he also further honed his technique with assistance from Luo Cheng-Hun, Tommy Li, and acclaimed Mainland Chinese instructors Xu Xuedong, Wang Se, and Zhang Gaoxiang. Chang began studying conducting with assistant professor Ku Feng-yu and studied further with Ku Pao-wen. Throughout his yangqin studies, Chang showed exceptional aptitude, demonstrating his abilities by winning silver medals in the Taiwan Student Competition of Music, Taiwan International Yangqin Competition, and the Taiwan Traditional Music Competition.


Chang’s nuanced control of timbre and unique way of interpreting music strike a powerful chord with both audiences and professionals, and he has given numerous successful performances of classic repertoire like Lady of Loulan, Rhapsody, Affection for the Loess, and Banks of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Chang’s 2019 performance of the concerto Phoenix at the HKCO Conducting Master Class received wide praise. Chang has joined HKCO and other orchestras on international tours, performing in China, Japan, Switzerland, German, Hungary, Belgium, Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Chang exhibited his captivating stage presence, natural control of musical flow, and unique ways of interpreting music at major concerts such as the Twelfth Yangqin Conference and ‘Taiwan Music Competition Yangqin Composition Performances’, premiering the pieces Lovers – Dream, Commanding Strings, Misty, Immortality - The Kiss of Thetis, and Butterfly Visions.
